Spectral table

Installation. Table with large-format dichroic glass and objects.

Spectral table is a large-format optical device. A table, a sheet of glass, and everyday objects. The glass splits the table in two, creating two surfaces, each with the same objects arranged symmetrically.

The installation invites interaction, alone or in pairs. Every movement produces an illusionistic effect when seen through the central glass: if an object is moved, it appears to gain a spectral chromatic double, or to split into two coloured ghosts, like a print out of register. As one moves around the table, objects appear and disappear, leaving it uncertain which are real and which are reflections. The apparent simplicity of the device, where everything remains in plain sight, heightens the effect of wonder and surprise.

Spectral table is part of the artistic research project Disperse the spectrum, on the spectral nature of light and images and on the interfaces between light and matter. The research starts from the optical properties of a specific material: dichroic glass, which interacts with light by reflecting certain wavelengths and letting others pass through. Building on the study of this material, the project develops a wide-ranging inquiry into luminous spectra, diffractive interfaces, and wavelengths, but also into wonder and the spectres that watch over us. The research has resulted in three different installations. Disperse the spectrum was developed with the support of El Graner, a center for dance creation and live arts.
