Disperse the spectrum
Installation. Four stations with stepper motor, mounts, and small-format dichroic glass, with pinspot lighting.

Disperse the spectrum is an installation that explores light and its relationship to matter. Four beams of light strike dichroic glass panes that rotate slowly on their own axis. Each dichroic pane splits the white light beam into two different colors, projected in opposite directions and shifting as the glass turns. The mechanical rotation also causes a slight vibration of the glass on its mount, producing a continuous tinkling sound that becomes the sonic atmosphere of the piece. Visitors can move through the space, walking among the mounts and light beams and drawing close to observe the materiality of the phenomenon up close.
Disperse the spectrum is part of the artistic research project Disperse the spectrum, on the spectral nature of light and images and on the interfaces between light and matter. The research starts from the optical properties of a specific material: dichroic glass, which interacts with light by reflecting certain wavelengths and letting others pass through. Building on the study of this material, the project develops a wide-ranging inquiry into luminous spectra, diffractive interfaces, and wavelengths, but also into wonder and the spectres that watch over us. The research has resulted in three different installations. Disperse the spectrum was developed with the support of El Graner, a center for dance creation and live arts.
