This exercise in replacement takes the name of a fictitious Chinese encyclopaedia in Jorge Luis Borges’ essay The Analytical Language of John Wilkins, which enables us to comment on the arbitrary nature of taxonomies. As Borges explains, every taxonomy represents a provisional attempt by language to classify a reality that cannot be encompassed.
