Spectral table

Spectral table is a large-format optical device. A table, a piece of glass, and a series of objects. The glass splits the table in two and creates two surfaces, each with the same objects arranged as in a mirror.

The installation invites interaction, alone or in pairs. Each movement of an object produces an illusionist effect when seen reflected in the central glass: if an object is moved, a spectral chromatic double seems to appear; if it is shifted slightly, the object splits into two coloured ghosts, like an out-of-register print; by walking around the table, objects appear and disappear. The apparent simplicity of the device, where everything remains in plain sight, intensifies its effect of illusion and surprise.

Spectral table is part of the artistic research project Disperse the spectrum, on the spectral nature of light and images, developed with the support of El Graner, a center for dance and performing arts creation. The research stems from the optical properties of a specific material: dichroic glass, capable of splitting light into two simultaneous behaviours—selectively reflecting certain wavelengths while allowing others to pass through. This phenomenon of interference and selective dispersion of the visible spectrum has given rise to three installations, which explore this spectral nature of light from various registers.
